The Patek Philippe Nautilus was created by renowned designer Gerald Genta and released to the world in 1976. Named after Captain Nemo’s vessel in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the stainless steel Nautilus was a radical departure from Patek’s traditional precious metal designs and kick-started the luxury sports watch trend, still popular today. Though available in several different sizes, dial colours and case materials, the Nautilus is easily recognizable by its rounded octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet and symmetrical ‘ears’ that act both as a hinge for the case and a guard for the crown. Whilst popular upon its release, the modern Nautilus has exploded in popularity, becoming one of the three hottest watches of the past decade (the Rolex Daytona and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak being the other two). Waiting lists for steel references at authorised retailers are rumoured to be at least 8 years long and on the pre-owned market, examples are changing hands for more than double the retail price. The popularity of the Nautilus shows no signs of waning and will likely remain a watch coveted by many, but owned by a select few.
