First released in 1982, the Rolex GMT Master II is the go-to watch for stylish globetrotters the world over. An evolution of the original GMT-Master designed for Pan-AM pilots on transatlantic flights, the GMT Master II utilises a simple mechanism to simultaneously tell the time in separate locations. The GMT Master II is most famous for its striking two-colour rotating bezel that allows the wearer to easily track an extra time zone via the additional 24-hour hand. A staple in the Rolex collection for well over half a century, the GMT Master II’s design has evolved considerably from its predecessor to become more reliable and durable than ever before. The modern references all feature scratch and fade proof Cerachrom bezels and independent hour hands that allow further ease of timezone tracking. The bright colours of the GMT Master’s bezel insert have always made it stand out amongst the others in the Rolex collection and they’ve also led to some interesting nicknames given to them by collectors. The blue & black bezel is known as the “Batman”, the red & blue the “Pepsi”, the red & black is the “Coke” and the brown & gold is known as the “Root Beer”. All GMT Master watches, no matter the reference, are able to display the time in two locations via the combination of the GMT hand and 24-hour scale bezel. For instance if the wearer is in Paris, but wants to know the time in New York, they would need to rotate the bezel 6 clicks counterclockwise as the time zone difference between the two cities is minus 6 hours. Once this is done, the wearer can read the local time with the regular hour hand against the hour markers and the time in New York with the GMT hand against the 24-hour scale on the bezel. For extra ease the bezel is split into two colours to represent night and day hours.
